Activism Action: From one White Person to Another, Day 3

*disclosure: this is an excerpt from a journal I kept the second week of June 2020. It contains my thoughts and feelings as I worked hard to educate myself about racism in America and world wide. Specifically as I came to know my own racism and privilege. It was a week that started a journey and what will be a lifetime of work. I encourage you to read Days 1 and 2 if you haven’t already.

The third day I didn’t share much, other than my response to a writing prompt. I do share on Day 4 the other work done, but for now, enjoy.

Day 3:

Writing prompt #1: What are you doing to shift the landscapes of your inner and outer world to prioritize Black folx well-being?

All of the above. I am shifting the scope of the art, literature, media, and news I take in to include more black voices and perspectives. I have muted my own voice on social media and have used that space to amplify the voices of POC. I am using what money I have to support local small businesses owned by POC and donating to a nonprofit monthly now that supports the Black Lives Matter Movement and other social justice work. I am reading, writing, and reflecting, discussing with friends, and making space within myself to do my own work. Addressing grief, guilt, and other feelings I have through writing and art.

I am using my voice to contact local and distant leaders about issues pertaining to the safety and service of our minority groups. I’ve contacted DA offices about prosecutions and justice for murdered black folx. I am also working to build this space in my life long term, so that I can continue to do this work, life long. Building habits and connections, not just a moment in time. I know that what I have done in the past is not enough. That I have benefited from racism, and that all the things I’ve done in the last few days will need to be a part of a lifetime worth of work… for this to really mean anything.
