The Podcast Project

For a little over two years I’ve thought on and off about starting a podcast. I purchased what I now realized to be an almost vintage version of Podcasts for Dummies. I’ve saved different equipment to my Amazon ‘buy later’ cart… and I’ve thought about it, a lot. Finally, I’ve decided that there’s no time like the present to give it a shot. Not unlike most of my social media content, I’m not expecting all that much. But I’m kind of excited, I know it’ll take some time, but let’s give it a shot.

So for step one: I have to really decide what my podcast will be about. Pick a topic, pick a style, and start to find my voice. Easier said than done. All you have have to do is look at my Instagram highlights to know that I have some difficulty honing my content to anything narrower than literally everything that flows through my mind.

While I’ve come up with several ideas, many of them are fairly broad. So I decided to find a bunch of new podcasts and listen to them over the next two weeks in an effort to glean a better understanding of the different styles that are out there. I have chosen a few already, many of which are different versions of podcasts on things I would like to talk about.

Podcasts I’m listening to this week:

  • Millennial by Megan Tan
  • Everyday Decisions with Jo Firestone
  • Staying In with Emily and Kumail
  • A Millennial’s Guide to Saving the World by Anya Kaats

I will also continue to list to but also further analyze all my NPR favorites.

As I’m writing this I am working my way through ‘Millennial’. I really like the story telling aspect, the honesty, and the length. I like that production wise, it’s feels pretty simple, and there’s some beautiful moments already with friends and people just responding naturally. I like that. It’s relatable. For what it’s worth I would suggest this for anyone who like a smooth and sweet story telling style with a high relatability score (yeah I think I just made up a new word. )

So I think so far I’ve decided:

  • Unscripted honest moments with real people. Or just me.
  • 30 min or less.
  • I want in include at least some of what it’s like to be a young millennial.

I’m excited… I know there’s lots to figure out but this is a start. I don’t have much in the way of ideas for a name yet. But I’ll hopefully have a few good options to share by my next entry in the Podcast Project.
