After writing Day one, we realized in a moment of beauty that we still had some hot water left in the tank. It was 11 pm but I rushed into the shower anyway. The water was surprisingly warm, making me both grateful and irked that the water heater is clearly the best and maybe only insulated part of the house.
Which brings me to the thing I didnt quite think through all the way. The house was only 55 degrees. Half the heat left in the water was lost to the air the moment it left the shower head. But I showered through. My hair and body clean. Freezing my ass off, by flashlight … I decided not to take the time to shave.
Afterward spending another few moments as close to the fireplace as I could get without being in the damn thing. Before crawling into bed with still dripping hair and feeling surprisingly exhausted after a day of doing… not much.
We woke up with the sun, a natural and nice thing to do, that we don’t do often. Nick split some wood right away and we got some heat going in the house. The light outside was beautiful.
After taking him to work, I went to the store to pick up some unscented candles, as we were both running low on and getting of the scented ones, our house smelling like a bath and body works. I also grabbed more batteries.
I stopped for hot breakfast and coffee. A nice pick me up. And headed home. I talked to family on the phone, many of whom have power but are living through -28 degree weather for the second week in a row right now. This winter has been no joke.
I set up the new candles, worked on going through clothes and folding. I messed around with some water colors and art… which was fun. The most exciting of which was an abstract that turned into a chicken.

Then, the power came on.
Which in some ways was almost disappointing, from the grill to candles we were really truly prepped and doing the thing. That said, I spent the rest of my day catching up on dishes, throwing in laundry, and doing homework. Streaming music the entire time.
This adventure ended up being much shorter than I expected. But I’m glad I was able to share it. Stay safe, stay warm and Thanks for reading!
