Adventure in Cooking: Inspired to Game

If you read my other posts you know that I went to the book store recently… Well I got a cookbook. I have a few others and Nick has a whole freaking collection, but I think this is only the second one I have ever actually bought for myself. It’s about Swedish/ Norwegian cooking in the Lagom way. (Lagom means not too much or too little.)

So balanced… which is the ultimate goal of this whole journey I’m on. I have used and identified with Lagom lifestyle aspects in other areas of my life. It often reminds me of how I was raised… and how I want to live my life. I’ll stop the Lagom rant right here and just say I started flipping through it felt inspired.

Inspired to cook… which isn’t something I can say I’ve felt much in my life. And I ended up experiencing this 3 times last week… later that night we watch Julie and Julia. And who wouldn’t find this epic blogging related food mission inspiring? Particularly a person like myself who is incredibly inclined already to put such personal challenges out there in the world.

The third and final time for the week came from our anniversary dinner at a popular French restaurant and Bar here in Portland. I had the most amazing rabbit. And I was transported back to a time when I ate nothing but fish, venison, small game, fruits and veggies. A kind of eating I miss and long for every time I think about beef or chicken. Seriously…

Anyway… So I found venison steak taco recipe in my new cook book, but in the end was unable to find venison steak. (If you’re in the Portland area and know where I can buy some, hit me up) But I did get my hands on some ground venison.

Once I got started, I realized that the difference between steak and ground isn’t nothing. I abandoned the simpler recipe and went rouge. To the grilled avocado, venison, and herbs, I added cabbage, chili flakes, Mexican seasonings, a corn salsa, avocado dressing, tomatoes, and peppers. I skipped cheese and other dairy products… just added some pickled red onion (part of the original recipe) and some lime juice, pepper, and salt.

The tacos turned out great! So while my recipe wasn’t as simple and in many ways I wasn’t even true to the concept… I had fun, made something we both loved. And I’m finally feeling like I’m finding my place in the kitchen. I even order new pan, just for me, that is pretty, versatile… and kind of like the concept of when you have new workout clothes, you’re more into working out 🙂

More than anything I think I’m starting to get into a grove… taking the game meats from my childhood and bringing them into foods I love now.

Inspired by game.
