#SecondHandSeptember

Love when I talk about stuff other than grief? Love my little mini series? Good news, as ‘Activism Actions: From One White Person to Another’ will be ending in the next week or so, I have come up with another fabulous thing to write about, for the month of September. Inspired by and in conjunction with yet another Instagram based challenge nonetheless.

This challenge combines fashion, sustainability, and shopping, three things I enjoy. Oxfam started this campaign last year I believe. To join in the challenge you commit to buying secondhand only for the month of September. While the campaign is largely focused on the fashion industry, this is of course an awesome goal to have across the board.

For my own personal participation I will not be buying any clothing or household items that are not either secondhand or both locally and sustainably made. I am also going to write at least 5 posts on issues that relate to secondhand shopping. I’m planning on including posts on my own personal favorite online secondhand resources and on my best secondhand buys of 2020.

I’m also going to do reviews of two plus size consignment shops here in Portland, both of which I visited for the first time this week in preparation for this project. I’m hoping to explore recent changes in the fashion industry, what they mean now, and what they could mean in the future, as well as have frank conversation about what we as consumers can do to make it better.

Lastly, for fun more than anything, I’m going to post a picture to Insta every Saturday in September of an outfit I’ve put together that includes at least two secondhand items. I’m going to do what I can to really start pushing myself to get into my fall fashion favorites and to just up my game after almost 5 months of not doing much. My Instagram is about to get a lot more fashionable… I’ve also had a little fun, editing a post to share to my story each week with the outfit flat lay. What can I say? Half of this is just me wanting to share the stuff I have fun with. But that’s also half the point isn’t it?

  1. I think it is so good that more people are aiming to buy more second hand clothing, and it is definitely good to have things like second hand september to bring awareness to this. I will also be partaking in this challenge, and good luck 🙂
